I wanted to expand on that idea and make a bigger and better version of it! </p><h1 style="text-align: center;"><b>SUPER MINI UNIVERSE!</b></h1><p style="text-align: left;">The plan for Super Mini Universe is to do alternating months of illustration and construction for a year to create a giant cohesive year long art project.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Starting March 1st, I would draw something every day building a month long super illustration. Then in April I would build a physical, 3D version of what I drew in March using various media and techniques, including layered laser cut wood, plush, stained glass, paint, paper etc.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Illustration would start again in May, picking up where March left off, and in June I would go back to construction, and so on. At that end of the year I would have one continuous, enormous illustration of the Super Mini Universe, and a huge, cohesive 3D version of it as well!</p><p style="text-align: left;">So the schedule would be:</p><p style="text-align: left;">March 2012: Draw<br />April 2012: Build March's Drawings</p><p style="text-align: left;">May 2012: Draw<br />June 2012: Build May's Drawings</p><p style="text-align: left;">July 2012: Draw<br />August 2012: Build July's Drawings</p><p style="text-align: left;">September 2012: Draw<br />October 2012: Build September's Drawings</p><p style="text-align: left;">November 2012: Draw<br />December 2012: Build November's Drawings</p><p style="text-align: left;">January 2013: Draw<br />February 2013: Build January's Drawings</p><p style="text-align: left;">March 2013 - CELEBRATE!</p><p style="text-align: left;">At the end of the year I will host an art show to celebrate the magic!<br />We will all hug and rejoice!</p><p style="text-align: left;">Throughout the year I will be making weekly blog posts to update the project. There will be a handmade book at the end of the project that will consist of the photos and illustrations posted in the blog.</p><div style="text-align: left;">I am approximating that the 3D version of Super Mini Universe will fill an 8' X 10' space. The layout is not definite yet! The universe has yet to be created! We weren't sure at this time what products we were going to make so I just decided to draw my own interpretation of Tigerbunny girls.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/paper_how_to/2.jpg" /><br /></div><br />We had decided on paper toys! So I did rough sketches based on how I thought about constructing them. I knew I was going to do the head similar to the My Melody toys I did for the Sanrio show. And the 8 paneled paper ball thing always ends up looking cute so I made that into a skirt. I decided that it should be flat on the bottom though so that the toys could sit without supports. So I styled the skirt similar to how the bun is constructed for the hamburger in the <a href="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/paperwonderland">Paper Wonderland</a> book.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/paper_how_to/3.jpg" /><br /></div><br />Then I made super rough templates in Illustrator.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/paper_how_to/4.jpg" /><br /></div><br />I built the rough templates out and drew where I wanted to add arms, legs, face details, tab supports, etc.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/paper_how_to/5.jpg" /><br /></div><br />Then I broke down the toys so that I could see how to draw the templates and where to place the cut marks to add pieces to the template.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/paper_how_to/6.jpg" /><br /></div><br />I combined my artwork and the rough templates to create refined templates to run through the vinyl cutter. I use the vinyl cutter when I am making layered paper toys because I can not cut out the super fine details. For the printed toys I usually just cut by hand. I said OH HELL YES. So this has been what I have been working on the past 3 months!<br /><br />Being a part of this project has been such an honor. I'm happy with how the booth came out. I had about a month of trial and error as to how I was going to created the character portraits. At first I was going to paint, then wood prints, and then I finally decided on doing layered paper cut outs. I think there are 50 characters - some of the main ones are repeated twice.<br /><br />I had the whole room laid out and designed for months so when it finally came time to set up it went pretty smoothly. It took about 10 hours. I decided to add the flooring in last minute - J (My husband) came out to help me with the floor!<br /><br />I attended the opening on Thursday but was recovering from a cold and I was mopey and tired! What a dud! I forgot my business cards and to take pictures of of everything. Oof!<br />I am going to be attending the <a href="http://crowdedteeth.blogspot.com/2010/11/sanrio-loungefly-nerds-party.html">Loungefly/Nerds</a> party tonight so I will be in full fun excitement mode and I am going to get pictures of all of the happenings and other art.<br /><br />Look out for new Crowded Teeth illustrations coming soon! Hearts!!<br /></div><br /><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/sanrio/SANRIO2.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Wall of character portraits! I designed the characters and wall first before starting. The strings hanging from the portraits on the end are felt bows. There are 50 tiny felt bows per wall.<br /></div><br /><br /><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/sanrio/SANRIO3.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">The chairs are school chairs, and I had laser cut wood/acrylic bows made for the chair back. The large Hello Kitty, Keroppi, and Tuxedo Sam balls are made out of a yoga ball (Kitty) and kid's bouncy ball (Keroppi and Sam). They are covered in felt.<br /></div><br /><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/sanrio/SANRIO4.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">The crocheted plushies were made by <a href="http://www.erinpaisley.com">Erin Paisley</a>. They are AMAZING. I am going to make a separate post just for Erin with close ups of the plushes. They are so awesome. She is one of the nicest people I've ever worked with. I contacted her a few months ago after falling in love with her <a href="http://www.etsy.com/people/eekdesign?ref=ls_profile">Etsy shop</a> and she totally ruled at turning my versions of the characters into magic.<br /><br /></div><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/sanrio/SANRIO5.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I made paper versions of some of the characters. Yay! We bought a regular sized chair and he cut the legs down to be about 6" off the ground. She wanted a little chair for in front of the fire place!<br />J cut it down, and sanded it. I stained it and made the cushion. The top part of the cushion folds down in case you want double-butt padding.<br /></div><br /><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/images/kiki_chair.jpg" /><br /></div><br />Speaker Covers<br />Our super awesome friends MADE us this stereo cabinet for a wedding present. It is super awesome. See that little square on the top center? That's an iPod dock. RAD.<br />Anyway - there are cloth speaker covers and we knew our cats would destroy them, so I took some foam board and covered it with paper to hide them. Saw a girl on the corner get hit by a car (she was not horribly hurt - just got knocked down) - then the driver DROVE AWAY. Continued to wait. J suggested I text message my boss who was already inside and is buddies with Sanrio folk. So I did and he was like "I WILL COME GET YOU!" So he tried but the people said that Royal-T was to capacity and "NO" - at this point J and I decided to leave because we are both bitches and didn't want to wait. I had thought that they were going to be done by 2pm - but they were still setting up at close to 3, so I ran away while my family and friends relieved me of all stress and AMAZINGLY and AWESOMELY set up all of the tables.<br /><br />Meanwhile, I hid in the bridal suite getting my makeup done by J's friend Rachel.<br />She did a sweet ass job - Everyone told me I looked all glowy and pretty. Aw. Guest-like people hadn't shown up yet so I snuck around the venue being anal about setups. I wore my flip flops and snacked and bothered everyone. J had already seen me in my dress so I helped him get ready also. Finally non-wedding party, and non-family people started showing up so I had to hide.<br /><br />When the guests walked in they were greeted with this!<br /><br /></lj-cut><div style="text-align: center;"><lj-cut text="Wedding Recap"><img src="http://www.crowdedteeth.com/blog/wedding/wedding_greeter.jpg" /></lj-cut><br /><lj-cut text="Wedding Recap"></lj-cut></div><lj-cut text="Wedding Recap"><br />It was a 24" X 36" gold framed poster of a photo that J and I had taken in our dining room a couple nights before.<br />It was absolutely ridiculous.<br /><br />There was also a wall sized movie screen that people saw when they walked in. Seriously don't know what we would have done without him and all his peeps.<br /><br />After photos we mingled, and ate, and listened to speeches by Jamie, and Vosh.<br />Jamie's speech was amazing.<br />He had made a video - "Our Golden Friends" where he had edited J's and my photos into the opening theme of the Golden Girls and him and lady, Chiara sang the theme song.<br />Followed by a scene where Sophia is getting married, he had placed my and J's heads over Sophia and her groom.<br />Then when it cut to Dorothy she said "I have a feeling JASON AND MICHELLE are going to be together a very long time."<br />Never ending laughs.<br /><br />Vosh's speech was very sweet and she talked about how she was so happy for us, and was happy to be a part of our special day. I was basically sobbing through her whole speech. We have known each other for 16 years and I totally love her.<br /><br />After that we cut the cake. J and I both took a bite out of the end of the burrito.<br />More eating, and mingling, and hanging out. But in completed form I thought it made better eyebrows. I generally try to make my drawings friendly to everyone - but I swear a lot in real life, so I decided to make an exception, just this once.<br /><br />I have not been busy with much. I had to make 70. It almost killed me. I had to hand punch all 4 layers. I was pretty much hating life. The top layer is a card with our generic info. The second layer is an RSVP fold-over postcard that is perforated so that people can tear it out and send it back to us. The third layer is venue info. printed on vellum, and the fourth layer is just a blank piece of card stock to sturdy it up.<br /><br />It also comes with a mini-photo strip of us that has our registry info on the back (all the wedding sites say it's tacky to include registry info. - but we didn't know how else to tell people! No one calls us...and it's tiny. STOP JUDGING). And there is a mini card explaining how the R.S.V.P. card works since we didn't think our grandmas would understand. Oh!
